Improving Office Immunization Rates

Once an office-based vaccine program is in place, there are many strategies to help increase the number of vaccines given by your practice. Research indicates that the most important predictor of vaccine uptake is provider recommendation and offer. Make vaccinations a routine part of the conversation you have with your patients. For tips on communicating with vaccine hesitant patients, please click here. Additionally, ACOG has developed an extensive resource for providers and patients, “Immunizations and Routine Obstetric-Gynecologic Care: A Guide for Providers and Patients.” Click here to view.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a dedicated page with strategies for increasing adult immunization rates. The “What Works” section includes information about the following topics.

  • Standing Orders

  • Computerized Record Reminder

  • Chart Reminder

  • Performance Feedback

  • Home Visits

  • Mailed/Telephone Reminders

  • Expanding Access in Clinical Settings

  • Patient Education

  • Personal Health Records

  • Measuring and Tracking Rates for Most Strategies

There are two ways to review the CDC material. Providers can read the material on the CDC website or can review the topics above in a learning setting with CME credits available upon completion.
