The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) is a membership organization dedicated to the advancement of women’s health through education, advocacy, practice, and research.  An important focus of our work is the development and recommendation of practice guidelines for the health care of women. Immunization against seasonal influenza (flu) and other vaccine-preventable diseases is an essential component of women’s primary and preventive health care. Ob-gyns are an important source of information and advice on immunization for adult, adolescent, and pregnant women and play a crucial role in a pregnant woman’s decision to get vaccinated against seasonal flu, protecting her health and the health of her unborn baby.

In 2005, ACOG called together a Task Force on Immunization (2005-2008) to strengthen the role of obstetrician-gynecologist in providing immunizations for adolescent and adult women.  The members of this College Task Force, which met from 2005 until 2008 were Stanley A. Gall, MD, Chair, W. Paul Glezen, MD, Bernard Gonik, MD, Marc R. Laufer, MD, Gregory R. Moore, MD, Laura E. Riley, MD, and J. Martin Tucker, MD.  Much of the material in this web site is based upon their thoughtful contributions.

In 2010, the College convened an Immunization Expert Work Group to further enhance the role of ob-gyns as vaccinators of adolescent and adult women. This Immunization Expert Work Group provides valuable contributions to this website.

The College has designed this website "Immunization for Women” to provide ob-gyns and their patients with a central, trusted source of up-to-date information on seasonal flu and other vaccine-preventable diseases, including immunization facts and safety, immunization schedules, clinical and practice management guidelines, and links to other reliable immunization resources. It is our goal to empower women with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about immunization and their health and to provide ob-gyns with a valuable resource for immunization best practices and patient education.
